Top 5 Reads for Middle & High Schoolers (and their parents!) this Summer
We often hear from parents that it’s harder to find time to connect with their kiddos as they enter middle school, high school and beyond. Especially as college begins to loom in the future, teens’ time is further pulled by SAT prep, college tours, AP courses, grad parties, prom, and sports. So, how do parents find ways to thoughtfully engage with their teens during this busy time? It’s no surprise that, as an education-based company, we turn to books as one of our solutions (because, truly, when is a great book not a good solution to a problem?).
We think that there’s no better time than summer to pick up two copies of a new Young Adult release: one for you, one for your child. Then, you’ll have a natural touch point to chat about over the dinner table. Plus, YA literature has never been better, so there are many great options that will have even parents and guardians turning pages late into the night.
So, where should you start? We’ve got 5 recommendations to start with (along with links to order directly from Walden Pond Books in Oakland, one of our favorite spots)!
I Kissed Shara Wheeler, Casey McQuiston: a fun rom-com for the romantics in your life
Does My Body Offend You?, Mayra Cuevas and Marie Marquardt: a great perspective on a regressive dress code in Florida
Firekeeper’s Daughter, Angeline Boulley: a story about fitting in, centered around an 18-year-old who feels out of place in her hometown and the Ojibwe reservation nearby
All My Rage, Sabba Tahir: a story about family, and forgiveness
The Electric Kingdom, David Arnold: a little bit post-apocalyptic, a little bit sci-fi, and a lot about finding beauty in a new world
Happy reading!
